Croquet victory

PA Dunedin Susan Wiggins, of Canterbury, overcame the tricky wind conditions to win the final of the silver and bronze croquet championships at the Tainui lawn in Dunedin yesterday. Mrs Wiggins comfortably beat Billie Millar, of Southland, 26-3, in the final to win her first silver medal. She. .had won a bronze medal soon after starting the sport in 1972 and has also won a silver mallet. Mrs Miller also had cause for satisfaction because she only entered the tournament at the last moment and had the satifaction of winning her first bronze medal. The loss to Mrs Wiggins was her first loss in nine games. The win completed a suc-

cessful year for Mrs Wiggins, because she had travelled to England to have a successful operation on a foot she injured in a car accident in 19 She stayed on to win the British women’s title in Cheltenham and later won the English invitation tournament at Nottingham. Mrs Wiggins (nee Grigg) is a former New Zealand golf representative, and on her display this week.it will not be long before she represents this country at croquet as well. Mrs Wiggins gained an early break of five, and it was not long before she led, 16-0. But then she became stymied on that score: “I kept losing my balance in the wind,” she admitted.
