Cut-backs in Japan’s coal imports would mean a 45,000-tonne drop in coal exports from Lyttelton this year, the Harbour Board’s port development committee heard yesterday. Mr David Jones, the board’s traffic manager, said Japan needed less coal for manufacturing steel this year. Exports from New Zealand, Australia, and the United States had been affected.
The effect on Lyttelton would be that 0n1y’205,000 tonnes would be shipped this year, instead of the planned 250,000 tonnes. . However, it appeared that next year’s coal quota would not be affected, Mr Jones said.
Advice from State Coal indicated that Japan would take 250,000 to 300,000 tonnes of coal next year, as previously indicated.
At present 4000 tonnes of West Coast coal is being stockpiled a week. The coal stockpile holds nearly 102,000 tonnes, comprising Stockton, Dobson, Reefton, and Liverpool coals. The next coal shipment is not expected • until January next year, followed by two more before March 31. Because of the long storage period before these ships arrive, coal is now being stockpiled in the coke storage area. ARRTVAT Union Lyttelton (7 a.m.) 7299, Wellington (U.M.S.).
