Mr Muldoon and religion

Sir,—Why are Methodists flirting with Marxism as being close to Christianity? They misunderstand John Wesley,'let alone Jesus. Bill Filshie asserts basic Marxism’s closeness to real Christianity “apart: from the denial of a God” (November 13). But that denial is important. What would Wesley say if any of his converts tried to describe Methodism as something approaching "Marxism plus a God”? All drift towards the heretical assertion, “The poor are pure,” is dangerous; Jesus commanded everyone to repent. Are the poor more sinned against than sinning? Only God can tell; in any case, even one sin estranges anyone, whether. “wretched poor” or “filthy rich,” from God. Methodism has abandoned the pursuit of holiness for the pursuit of Utopia far too much; no wonder it is in danger of collapse. As the ancient Greeks said, “Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.”—Yours, etc., R. M. ANDERSON. November 17, 1982.
