Steer shot
An escaped steer rampaged through Ashburton streets before finally being shot by the police on Monday evening. The animal escaped from the abattoir in Bridge Street, and was sighted on Burnett Street about 6.20 p.m. When the police arrived on the scene the steer was running at people along the street,
said Senior-Sergeant W. J. Porter. An attempt by the police to drive the animal out of they built-up area to the Mania-o-roto scout park failed, and it was '.finally cornered in Tancred Street The police cleared neighbouring houses before shooting the animal.
