Mr Morel to stand down from C.T.C.
The secretary of the Canterbury Trades Council, Mr L. G. Morel, has not offered himself for re-election at the council’s annual meeting next week. “I have had six years at it. I . feel I have done my stretch," he said yesterday. Mr Morel, secretary of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union, said .that he believed the post was a full-time job. A.proposal that the post be recognised by the council as a full-time one with a salary was rejected recently by the council because of the lack of support for the idea from affiliated unions. The annual meeting on November 25, will vote for a replacement for Mr Morel. .The' two candidates are Messrs G. G. Walker, and J. A. Stewart. Mr Walker is secretary of the South Island Fire Brigades’ Union and advocate for .the Allied Liquor Trades Union, which has members in the brewery and soft drink industries. He has had a long career, in the- trade union movement attending numerous. national conferences of the Federation of Labour as a delegate. After many years as secretary of the. Firemen’s Union, had active service as 'a; fireman, Mr Walker was elected secretary of the
Trades Council in 1970. He resigned in January,- 1975, and was defeated when an -election was held in March, 1976. His successor Mr F. E. McNulty, served as secretary until defeated in an election by Mr Morel in December, 1976. Mr Stewart, who was appointed secretary of. the Christchurch branch of the Actors Equity and of the South Island Projectionist’s Union this year,- has had a shorter period of involvement with the union movement. He helped found the Labour Party “ginger”, group. Labour Left, before the General Election last
year. A co-founder is Mr P. E. Piesse, vice-president of the Trades Council. Both Mr Piesse and the president of the council Mr W. R. Cameron, will be reelected unopposed. Twelve trade unionists have offered themselves for seven seats bn the executive. All seven sitting members of the executive are standing. The sitting members are Messrs W. B. Brown (labourers), P. R. Liggett, (Drivers), R. Lingard. (Hotel Workers), R. A. Lowe,. (Labourers), H. McCrory (Clothing), F. E. McNulty, and Mrs Hillary Brown (nee Jones). Other nominations are Messrs K. Menton (Car-
penters), A. Lea (Food Processors), R. J. Todd (Engineers), and Mesdames Maureen Hilston (Shop Employees) and Doreen Shannon (Clerical); The post of council representative on the national council of the Federation of Labour will be contested again by Messrs McNulty and Liggett. Mr McNulty has defeated Mr Liggett for the post for the last three successive years. ' : / _ Mr Ementon is standing against the sitting members of the disputes committee, Messrs Lowe, and McNulty. The committee considers possible council recommendations on disputes referred., to it by affiliated unions.
