Fire ban due
December 1 is still the tentative date for the start of the annual summer ban on fires in the open in the Christchurch area. At one stage it was thought that the-ban might have to. be imposed earlier because of ’Continuing drought, but local authorities, agreed on December 1. The -decision was up to the local authorities, said a Fire Service spokesman. The fire risk was being monitored, he said. - In/recent years the ban has' not usually come into force before mid-December. -The fire risk in)Canterbury forests was still moderate, said a- spokesman for the Forest Service.
