Broadway hit musical closing soon
NZPA New York "Annie." the hi! Broadway musical based on the famed cartoon orphan, is closing finally - its 2377th and last performance scheduled for January 2. a spokesman for the show has said. "Annie." in which five young actresses to date have played the title role, opened on April 21. 1977, and won seven Tony awards, including "best musical" of the 1977-78 season. So far. it has grossed more than SUS2OO million from all sources. When the doors close on the show. "Annie" will have become Broadway s seventh-longest-running musical, with “Grease." still the all-time champion. However, the little lady with the curly red hair, white eyes, and faithful dog. Sandy, may be back — in a musical sequel called "Annie II." Created by the team that came up with the original "Annie" - Charles Strouse. Martin Charnin. and Thomas Meehan — the new show is expected to open in Broadway next season, according to a spokesman. David Powers.
