King’s wins debate
Burnside High School's debating team lost to King's College, of Auckland, at the national final of the New Zealand Jaycees secondary schools debating competition on Saturday. The topic for the final, held in Wellington, was “that this is the ‘me’ generation.” The Burnside team took the affirmative. Burnside’s leader, Grant Mangin, said the final score favoured King’s College by 20 points. The debate, which was to have been held in the Legislative Council Chamber
at Parliament was actually held at St Patrick's College hall because of confusion over bookings, he said. Taking part in the debating competition had been a “valuable experience” for team members, he said. It had given them opportunity to develop writing, speaking, and organisational skills. The team, which included Andrew Cutler and Jane Shearer, was coached by Mrs Margaret McCullough, a Burnside High School teacher. The team won a trophy as runner-up.
