Bitumen shortage likely
PA Wellington Bitumen shortages were now likely because of the continuing shutdown of the Marsden Point refinery’s maintenance programme, said the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch. A bitumen, shortage was certain if the start up of the refinery was delayed beyond December 1, he said. “Without any further pro-
duction of this product from the refinery our ports’ bitumen storage facilities are insufficient to maintain supplies through the summer months.” Most of the country would be out of bitumen by January because it was not possible to import it to suitable specifications. “Therefore, the whole New Zealand reading programme,
in particular summer resealing and a lot of road contracting jobs, is being put at risk by the continued inactivity on the refinery maintenance programme,” Mr Birch ' said. If the refinery could not start for any reason at the . end of November, as planned, petrol supplies for •. Christmas motoring might • also be put at risk, ,he said.
