'No special policy’
PA Wellington The Police Department had no special policy to recruit more Maori and Pacific Island police, the Minister of Police, Mr Couch, has told Parliament. Answering a question,- he said that policemen and women were “chosen for quality not race.” Neither colour nor race were qualifi-
cations for acceptance. In the last six years, 1822 policemen and policewomen had .been recruited, Mr Couch said. This included 131 Maoris (7.1 per cent of the total) and 64 Pacific Islanders (3.5 per cent of the total). Figures were not available for any previous years, he said.
