‘Musical rooms’ explained

Playing "musical classrooms" at Aranui High School was regrettable but necessary, said Education Department officers yesterday.

They confirmed that the department would have to install three extra classrooms at Aranui within a year of removing two because they were "surplus."

A bad classroom shortage at Kaiapoi High School made removing the two prefabricated classrooms last March necessary, said the departments regional executive officer. Mr Robert Sanders. Aranui had more classrooms than its roll entitled it to. and the school could not justify retaining them, he said.

An unexpectedly big roll increase next year of 51 pupils meant that the school would again be entitled to the rooms. The department had agreed to replace the two rooms and add a room to the school's work experience unit.

- Removing the rooms and tidying up cost $5300, and it would cost about $5BOO to replace them. This was still much cheaper than the $62,000 cost of building two new permanent classrooms at Kaiapoi High School. Mr Sanders said.

The disruption caused at Aranui High School was unfortunate. but the department had been caught in a "pinch situation" that would probably not recur.
