Quail Is. poisoning
Rabbits and opossums causing extensive damage to Quail Island’s young trees have forced the closing of the island to the public while poison is laid. The island' and its walkways will be closed for 10 days from Saturday. A spokesman for the Lands and Survey Department Mr B. Thomas, said that vast numbers of newly planted trees had died over the last year because of the animals.
Rangers have tried shooting the pests, but to no avail. Mr Thomas said the. most effective way of eradicating the problem was to lay 1080 poison, which would be done by the Banks Peninsula Pest Destruction Board. The closing of the island for 10 days was a statutory measure to ensure the safety of the ’ public, said Mr Thomas. It allowed time for the poison to be leached.
