Wet October in Dunedin

PA Dunedin Dunedin has had its wettest October since records were first taken in 1918. A meteorologist, Mr R. McGann, said yesterday that 144 mm of rain had fallen so far this month which exceeded the previous October high of 139 mm recorded in 1947. Almost 85mm of this month’s total fell on Dunedin in a four-day storm that abated yesterday. River levels in the region are slowly receding after the Taieri River peaked at high tide on Tuesday night. The South Island Main Trunk line was closed south of Dunedin because of flooding and passengers on the Southerner services were carried by bus. Fifteen goods train services were cancelled.
