Venturer scouts walk out

An overdue party of venturer scouts, led by a former Special Air Service trooper, emerged safely from the headwaters of the Ashburton River, near Lake Heron, yesterday morning.

Three members of the tramping party walked out and five were picked up by a private helicopter which had been hired by the parents of one.

The party had been due out on Monday. The mother of one of the boys said yesterday that she believed a search could have been started earlier.

Chief Inspector A. W. M. Lawrence, of the Christchurch police, said that the police had made a careful

assessment of the situation on Tuesday, in consultation with their experienced search and rescue adviser at Methven.

“They were only a day overdue, and we knew that they were well equipped with food and clothing, and that there were huts in the area, and that they had a very experienced and competent leader. It was decided that Wednesday morning would be in plenty of time to launch a search,” said Mr Lawrence. The Methven search and rescue group and the police were ready to move immediately yesterday morning, had a search been required, he said.
