Ship unscathed after grounding
The Coastal Trader was grounded for about 90 minutes in Otago Harbour on Tuesday afternoon, but the ship suffered no structural damage. The inter-island ferry freighter arrived four hours late at Lyttelton yesterday because of the incident. The 2550-ton ship sailed for Auckland last evening. An inspection of the vessel’s hull after the grounding had revealed no damage, said the ship’s master, Captain R. J. Tindall.
'She was grounded in soft mud while sailing through an apparently narrow channel in Blanket
Bay. Captain Tindall said only one tag was needed to pull the ship off the mud bank.
She then returned to Port Chalmers to undergo a quick inspection. After that, she set off on her weekly rurt to Lyttelton. About the only part of the ship to suffer, during the grounding were “a few loose barnacles,” said a spokesman for the Shipping Corporation which owns and runs the ship. .Crew members said yesterday there had been no sound at ail when the vessel became grounded. She just slid to a halt in the mud. Captain Tindall is preparing a report on the incident for the Shipping Corporation. ARRIVALS Union Lyttelton (7.30 a.m.) 7299, Wellington (U.M.S.).
