Speedway opener
The annual Coca Cola Fireworks spectacular will herald the new season at Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday evening. The 1982 Canterbury saloon champion and runner-up to the South Island and New Zealand titles. Tony Cardwell, will drive his new 1982 Pontiac Firebird Transam. Doug Smith will return to racing with his Chevy Monza completely rebuilt with a 400 cu V 8 motor. Neil Graham, a six to eightcylinder driver from last season will drive the former Denis Bolt Torana Hatchback with the 350
V 8 motor which was previously in Doug Smith's car. Paul Williams will drive the former Royce Clive-Wayne Pierson Comaro, and Roy Grainger returns after a three-year at sence with a new 350 Chevy Monza. The domination by Mike Allan of the open-wheeled Sportsman class looks threatened by Joe Annon, who, with his new 302 Ford racer, has been turning in some impressive practice times. John Townshend looks to be the driver to beat in the fourcylinder saloon class.
