Junior tennis win to Coman
Peter Coman. of Nelson, beat Garv Lawson (Canterbury) in three sets to win the 18-years boys’ singles final at the Canterbury hardcourt junior tennis championships at Wilding Park. In the semi-finals Coman had beaten Simon Jamieson and Lawson eliminated Alister Cottrell. Both matches were shortened because of the adverse weather conditions. The girls’ 18-years singles title went to Jane Howe at the expense of Lorelei Mason, again after the eventual winner had lost the first set Howe had a comfortable semi-final victory over Leigh Johnson, but Mason was fully extended by Delia O'Malley.’ Some’finals in the other grades had to be postponed, and will be played next week-end. Results.— 18 years Boys.—Singles, semi-finals: P. Coman beat S. Jamieson. 9-3; G. Lawson beat A. Cottrell,’ 9-4. Final: Coman beat Lawson. 4-6. 6- 7-6. Doubles, semi-finals: Cottrell and Coman beat J. Gourley and M. Milligan. 9-6; A. Adair and Lawson beat J. Cotton and Jamieson. 9-2. Girls.—Singles, semi-finals: J. Howe beat L. Johnson. 6-3. 6-4: L. Mason beat D. O'Malley, 6-4. 2-6. 7- Final: Howe beat Mason. 4-6. 6-4. 6-1. Doubles, semi-finals: Howe and Mason beat L. Atkinson and Wright. 9-0; Johnson and O’Malley beat H. Barlow and F. Pizzey, 9-4.
