Farm leaders to meet board

PA Wellington Farming leaders will hold a special meeting to discuss the Meat Board’s decision to take over lamb and mutton marketing for two years, said the chairman of the electoral college of the Meat Board and Wool Board, Mr Donald Mac Nab.

The college sought the meeting in Wellington on November 4, said Mr MacNab. a Wanganui farmer.

Members wanted to learn from the Meat Board about the “nuts and bolts” of the new scheme, he said.

The request did not mean there was strong opposition by the college to the proposal. However, Mr Mac Nab said he was aware that some members had reservations

about it. “A. number of members have written to me or telephoned me, and the main view they have expressed is to want to be briefed on a lot of matters — such as the financing of the scheme — which had not been finalised before now,” he said.

The meat Board and the Meat Exporters’ Council announced early this month that the board would take over the lamb and mutton export trade because of uncertainties in the market.

The electoral college normally meets the Meat Board and Wool Board twice a year to discuss the boards’ performance and elect farmers' representatives to the boards.
