Representing those who have died on New Zealand roads this year are pupils of Dawson Road Primary School, Otara, in Manukau City, filling the carriageway of a suburban street. About 550 people have died in road accidents. Last year the toll was 671 deaths and 14,000 injuries. The Minister of Transport, Mr Gair, told the Traffic Institute recently that if the toll continued the way it was going, it would be the highest since New Zealand’s blackest year on the road, 1973, when 843 people lost their lives.
