Army Band back
"Showtime 82." the New Zealand Army Band's annual family concert series for. Christchurch, will be held in the Town Hall this week-end. It will be a “new look” Army Band, that will entertain at the concerts. Twentytwo members have returned from a two-year posting with the band of the Ist Battalion Infantry Regiment in Singapore and taking the baton is the band’s new director, Lieutenant Paul Milner.
Former director Major Jim Carson will be keeping an eye on proceedings in his new position as manager of the Town Hall.
The programme for the concerts varies from music of the Big Band era to
traditional brass music, including a complete military retreat ceremony. Pieces include “Chariots of Fire.” “Whispering Grass.” “Musical Fairy Story” and a salute to Elvis.
Elaborate props, costumes and lighting will be used during the concerts, especially for the “Space Themes” item.
Guest artist will be Judy Barnes from Dunedin. She has appeared on television and radio programmes and was voted Top Vocalist at the South Island Country Music Awards last year. Supporting artists include the pipes and drums of the Caledonian Society’s Highland Pipe Band.
Members of the band will have a busy week leading up to the concerts. On Tuesday, October 26 a street march is planned from Tuam Street to Cathedral Square.
There will be a dress rehearsal on Tuesday evening to an audience from local childrens' homes and disabled organisations.
School concerts will be given on Wednesday and Thursday and the first public performance is on Friday at 6.30 p.m. The Saturday concert will begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday concert at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the concerts on October 29, 30 and 31 are $6 adult and $3 children and senior citizens. The money raised will go the Intellectually Handicapped Society.
