Battery hens

Sir,—Your correspondent Andrew Steven (October 23) is amazed over protests of cruelty to battery hens. There are in society those who care for creatures. Prison inmates are far from battery fed, but have amenities and exercise and are in prison because they choose to commit crimes against society. What crimes do hens, dogs, cats or any creature commit, that cause extreme suffering. Creatures are not as dumb and senseless

as some of our human counterparts. Cruelty in any form, be it to animal or human, is a sin against God and all humanity.—Yours, etc., IVY V. KENCH. October 24, 1982.

Sir,—Yes, I am delighted to say that I am more concerned for the battery hens, than prison inmates. As animals cannot speak for themselves, I as well as many other dedicated people, care very much about the conditions that battery hens are submitted to. Andrew Steven (October 23) has stated narrow views; as far as our “battery-fed inmates” are concerned, they only have themselves to blame—Yours, etc.,

LYNNE RICKETTS. October 24, 1982.

Sir,—Andrew Stevens (October 23) digressed to an unrelated issue within a few lines of his letter. While decrying "the ridiculous letters in your columns” it appears that the only factor he is concerned with is that "hens do not get much sex.” Is that all he is concerned about when these' creatures are confined in cages where they can hardly move? Has he then some intelligent ideas for the promotion of hens and roosters to be granted full rights for sexual activity? Incidentally I cannot recall reading any letters relating to the concern of the welfare of “battery fed prison inmates” from your correspondent—Yours, etc. NATALIE TAYLOR. October 24, 1982.
