Festival of words

The lighter side of learning languages will be explored by more than 1000 Canterbury schoolchildren today. Singing, dancing, cooking, and competitions are part of a languages festival at Christchurch Teachers’ College organised by the Canterbury Association of Language Teachers and college staff. “It is to show pupils that

learning languages can be fun," said a senior lecturer in foreign languages, Mrs Clare Clark, yesterday. The fun carries a serious message: you do not have to master a language to get something out of learning one. "We will show that learning languages can have immediate benefits,” Mrs Clark said. Several ethnic groups will

contribute to the two-day festival. Displays and liVe performances have been organised. A further 1000 intermediate and secondary school language learners are expected at the festival tomorrow. Mrs Clark said this year's festival was much bigger than the previous two. Another festival was planned for 1984.
