Geothermal power station approved

PA Wellington Government approval has been given to the construction of the Ohaki geothermal power station and the development of the Broadlands geothermal field at a total cost of $230 million.

The Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, said yesterday that the station should be completed in 1988. “The 1982 Energy Plan shows decreased energy margins from 1985 onwards and the commissioning of Ohaki will help ensure a reliable electricity supply," Mr Birch said. The land necessary for the power station and for some of the geothermal steam production would be leased from the Maori landowners. Full agreement on leasing arrangements had been reached with the owners of the land on the west bank of the Waikato River. The operation of Ohaki would be supervised from nearby Wairakei, Mr Birch said. The capacity of Ohaki would be about 100 MW. The running and maintenance of the power station and the geothermal field would mean that about 70 new jobs were created.
