Call to notice signs

Motorists using facilities near the Naval Point slipway at Lyttelton have been advised to take notice of the road signs there. The Lyttelton Harbour Board will clamp down on motorists breaking its bylaws at the point. Cases of dangerous driving, speeding, and even assault had been reported to the board, its port development committee was told. Mr David Jones, the board’s traffic manager, said

that during the last boating season and again at the start of this season he had had many complaints about motorists’ behaviour at Naval Point. Consequently, more signs showing speed limits and parking areas had been posted. The board’s honorary wardens were also patrolling the area to ensure that the restrictions were obeyed. “People are meant to enjoy the facilities there for boating, not for boxing,” said

Mr Jones. Alrady this year eight prosecution notices had been issued and several warnings given to motorists for parking in restricted zones. Harbour Board wardens can only warn erring motorists, but can easily get in g touch with board traffic officers who will issue “tickets” for violations of the harbour traffic by-laws. Wardens and officers have been asked to concentrate on the problems at Naval Point.
