Shortage of housing unsupported

from last year's census showed a decrease in numbers of people a household compared with the previous 1976 census. There were now 3.13 persons a household, compared with 3.35 five years ago, he said. In 1981 there were 73,000 households with six or more persons compared with more

than 100,000 in 1971. In Auckland the number of private dwellings rose 10.3 per cent between 1976 and 1981 compared with a population rise in the same period of 3.35 per cent. The housing situation in 1982 was “vastly improved” on that of 1976. Mr Young said.
