Royal bagpipes up for auction

NZPA staff correspondent

London Bagpipes owned by King Edward VII when lie was Prince of Wales have been sent to Sotheby’s- for sale from New Zealand.

The bagpipes now belong to the specialist bagpipe suppliers of New Zealand, MacPhee’s of Wellington, the auction house said.

They originally belonged to Prince Edward, who was a pupil of William Ross, personal piper to Queen Victoria, but he gave up playing them when he became King and presented them to William Campbell, a member of the Royal household and a distinguished piper. Campbell emigrated to Canada and the pipes were bequeathed to a brother who passed them to a Pipe-major Burne who took them with him when he emigrated to New Zealand.

The pipes were made by R. G. Lawrie, of Glasgow, and bear a silver band with the Royal arms of Queen Victoria on the bass drone

stock. They are contained in a case with a brass plaque inscribed: “H.R.H. Prince of Wales bagpipes." Sotheby's expects them to fetch up to £lOOO (SNZ23OO).

“The Times," commenting on the sale, said no bid was expected from the Royal Family.

“According to Buckingham Palace, none of the Royal Princes play the pipes,” it said.

THe auction is on Novem ber 3 and 4.
