N.Z. urged to place more emphasis on presentation
PA Auckland New Zealand must place more emphasis on the presentation of fruit products if horticulture is to achieve significant growth in Japan, says an Auckland food processing scientist, Miss Margaret Hogg, who has returned from a three-week study trip. Miss Hogg says that the Japanese have a completely different concept of quality. The accent was on neat and vibrant presentation, whereas New Zealanders emphasised the flavour and texture of fruit. “We have to be particularly careful that we look at
food through Japanese eyes,” she said. What New Zealand saw as high quality presentation was commonplace in Japan. Japan was seen as an area of considerable potential in horticulture, and it was important that the New Zealand marketing people there be given the necessary scientific back-up. This was only possible by sending study groups such as the recent mission from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The 13 scientists, led by Dr John Trough ton from Wellington, included six from the Mount Albert research centre in Auckland.
