Plastic bills
Three California brown pelicans found with the upper halves of their beaks torn off by a vandal may undergo surgery to have plastic bills attached to keep them from starving to death. The State Fish and Game Department says that as* many as 15 of the endangered birds have been sighted with their upper bills missing. The pelicans, which were mutilated with arr instrument like a hacksaw or pliers, would starve in the wild because they cannot keep fish in their pouches without their upper bills, said Dr Joe Jehl, assistant director of the Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute. — San Diego.
