Search for plane fails

PA Dunedin Persistent rain and snow continued to hamper the search for the missing pilot, Mr Colin Whittlestone, yesterday. Mr Whittlestone, aged 61, a Tarras farmer, has been missing since Saturday morning when he left Tarras alone in his single-engined Cessna 172 on a 25-minute flight to Alexandra. The search co-ordinator at Alexandra Airport, Mr N. J. McPherson, said from the airport yesterday that three aircraft had been up since 9 a.m. covering an area from Bannockburn to Roxburgh. Snow and rain had eased little since Saturday and was restricting the efforts of searchers. The higher areas of the Dunstan mountains have been inaccessible so far. By 3 p.m. all three aircraft had landed and were waiting for the weather to clear. Constable D. McTainish of Cromwell said it was impossible to mount a ground search because the area concerned was so large and was deep in snow.
