Mr Garth Varcoe, the building and services officer with the Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R., prepares for a 95km journey across Antarctica. Accompanied by a safety group in a Snowtrack vehicle, Mr Varcoe drove a D4 bulldozer from Scott Base to Vanda carrying supplies. The 35-hour journey was made in conditions of poor visibility, temperatures as cold as -40deg Celsius, and an average speed of 2km/h. Supplies included building materials for Vanda Station, a hut for Cape Chocolate, materials for a dry valley drilling project, and fuel for another scientific party.
