De Lorean leaves cell for court
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles The car maker, John De Lorean, leaves his two-man prison cell in Los Angeles today to ask a court to reduce his SUSSM bail. But the prosecutor, Mr James Walsh, who has described De Lorean as a staggering bail risk, is expected to ask the same court to increase the amount of money De Lorean has to find to be released pending trial on drug charges, said informed sources. Since last Tuesday, when the American, aged 57, was arrested, legal experts have been: trying to find the guarantees and cash demanded for his bail within his complicated financial network. His lawyer; Mr Joseph Ball, who has defended many celebrities in Los Angeles, is expected to plead with a district court magistrate, Mr James Penne, that the amount of bail demanded far outweighs the seriousness of the alleged crime. De Lordan, whose failing car factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been closed by the British Government, is charged with conspiring to Eossess with intent to distriute 100 kg of cocaine.
A prosecution document submitted in court last Wednesday alleged that De Lorean hoped to save his factory with profits from drugs. The president of an American company has said that his firm had offered to lease the car factory.
