Chch teams win main prizes

Three teams from Christchurch which took part in the South Island Maori Cultural competitions held in Nelson over the week-end won the main prizes. About 21 groups from throughout the South Island took part in a programme of action songs, pois, and hakas which were judged by a panel of South Island and North Island judges. Te Kotahitanga entered its senior and junior teams. The senior team, which will be attending the Polynesian Festival next February, won

the trophy for the most points, performed the best action song, ancient song, and haka. Taiaha ' won the haka leadership trophy, and was first equal in the female leadership trophy. The Ngapotiki, a newlyformed group, trained by Pita Peawini, excelled by winning the entry and.exit trophy, the poi trophy, the' best costumed team, and was first equal in the female leadership competition. The Otautahi Juniors had a clean sweep of all the junior trophies.
