Two riders fined

Payment of dividends was delayed in two races at Rangiora yesterday while the North Canterbury Racing Club’s judicial committee investigated allegations of interference, but in both instances the judge's placings were allowed to stand although two riders were fined for breaches of the rules. After the North Canterbury Cup the Riccarton apprentice, Grant Davison, the rider of the runner-up, Double Jay, was alleged to have caused interference to the third placegetter, Quay Princess, over the concluding stages of the race. The committee found that slight interference did take place but it was not sufficient to alter the placings. However, they did fine Davison, who admitted shifting in as alleged, $5O. In coming to that decision they took into account that the horse shifted in quickly when about to be struck with the whip and also the tendency of Double Jay to shift in under pressure in previous races. The Riccarton apprentice, David Wadley, was fined $3O for careless riding in the Wade Sports 1200. The committee found that Wadley had allowed his mount, Frontiniac, to shift outwards in the run home and that he had struck Ocean Ribbon, the fourth placegetter, over the head with the whip. The committee did not consider that the interference suffered by Ocean Ribbon warranted a change of placings and when coming to the decision of penalty took into account Wadley’s limited riding experience.
