Nine admit thefts from Nathans
PA Auckland L. D. Nathan. Ltd, had lost property valued at about $300,000 in recent months, the Otahuhu District Court was told when 10 former employees admitted theft and receiving, charges. Three other former employees pleaded not guilty to charges of theft as a servant when they appeared before Judge Hall. They were Rewi Morehu Hudson, aged 19, a storeman. of Papakura, who was remanded until December 16 for a defended hearing on one theft charge; Lewis Alan Rangi, aged 19, a bulker, of Otahuhu, who elected trial by jury and was remanded until January 28 on two theft charges; and Brian Edward Roebeck, aged 25, a storeman, of Manurewa, who also elected trial by jury on one theft charge and was remanded until January 24. James Thomas Campbell, aged 19, a storeman, of Papatoetoe, was remanded for a week without plea to
seek legal advice. The Judge granted a continuation of bail for all four, and for 10 who pleaded guilty and have been remanded for probation reports and sentence. Those who pleaded guilty and have been remanded until November 4 for sentence were: Kevin John Annabell, aged 19. a shipping clerk, of Manurewa, one charge of theft as a servant; Danellie Anthony de Thierry, aged 18, a storeman, of Wiri, one charge of theft as a servant; Daniel Tanatana de Thierry, aged 39, a forkhoist operator, of Wiri, two charges of receiving; John William Leeney, aged 20, forkhoist driver, of Green Bay, two charges of theft as a servant; Joseph Herbert Makiri, aged 46. a storeman, of Manurewa, one charge of theft as a servant, and one of receiving; Kevin John McDonald, aged 21, a storeman, of Papatoetoe, one charge of theft as a servant; and Eric Tolhopf,
aged 18, a laminator, of Otara. one charge of theft as a servant. Three former employees who pleaded guilty and were remanded until November 5 for sentence were: Massey Poa. aged 34. a storeman, of Manurewa. one charge of theft as a servant, and one of receiving; Tania Danielle Slattery, aged 18, a replenisher. of Papatoetoe, one charge of theft as a servant: and Vernon Raymond Signal, aged 55, a 'storeman, of Manurewa, one similar charge. The cases were called individually. Detective Sergeant M. E. Ohagan, prosecuting, said that "over recent months the complainant, L. D. Nathan. Ltd, has been losing property at an estimated value of $300,000.” The charges had arisen after search warrants were executed at the homes of the accused on October 13.
