Dog control bill
Sir,—Unless legislation is passed in the new dog control bill to make dog ownership a real responsibility by licensing owners rather than’dogs, with compulsory spaying of bitches unless required for breeding, such window dressing as changing the present 10 days grace for impounded animals to seven days before being slaughtered, will not solve the unwanted and surplus dog problem. It would be cheaper for everyone in the long term to control the sources of supply rather than employ a full-time staff dog catching and impounding, as most large towns do. It would also spare dog impounders the ignominy of destroying highly intelligent ‘animals whose predicament is the direct result of the inadequate regulations. — Yours, etc., J. SHARP.
