Consultant praises N.Z. radio news

PA Wellington An American broadcasting journalist, Lou Adler, says Radio New Zealand’s news service is excellent, but television news in this country is shallow. However. Mr Alder says, television news in New Zealand is no worse than television news anywhere else. Mr Alder — said to be the journalist upon which the television character. Lou Grant, is based, although he has denied this — became news consultant to Radio New Zealand earlier this year. Visiting Wellington, he said he had worked as television journalist for a year and did not like the medium. It was superficial, put too much emphasis on pictures and not enough on substance and too much went into make-up and hairciits. Mr Alder is vice-president and news director of WOR Radio in New York, the flagship station of the RKO general stations. He said it was difficult and cumbersome to cover a news

story for television. It was also expensive to do television news well, and in small markets such as New Zealand it was particularly hard to get good talent. Radio was a much more creative and substantive news medium, he said. Radio New Zealand had a good, solid news operation on all levels. It had talent and excellent people in executive positions, he said. Mr Alder first came to New Zealand 18 months ago.
