Softball Postponement for fortnight of grand final
Appalling weather conditions in the 'annual General Lee Burnside women’s softball tournament yesterday forced the postponement of the grand final until November 3. Teams competing at Burnside High School struggled in the field for outs while pitchers had tremendous difficulty -ia controlling the wet, slippery ball. Play continued through until 2 p.m. by which time the semi-finals had been. completed. The host team, General Lee Burnside beat Monowai, 7-5, and United beat Woolston, 14-1. The United-Woolston match enabled United to maintain its winning record for the tournament to take a well-earned place in the final after it had beaten the top seed, Burnside, in section
play on Saturday. The other semi-final was a close-fought affair between Monowai and Burnside. The highlight was a tremendous centrefield home-run from Burnside’s Marilyn Lee while Robyn Storer finished with an impeccable batting average of 1000. After the semi-finals team coaches had a meeting and it was mutually agreed between Burnside and United that conditions were totally unsuitable and the final will now be played on Wednesday week at Nancy’s Corner on Hagley Park at 6 p.m. Woolston and Monowai, who were to play off for third and fourth placings, simply agreed to split the prize money while Albion B tooK fifth place off Technical, from Ashburton.
