Week-end road toll now six
PA Wellington The Labour Day week-end holiday road toll stands at six. A corporal from Waiouru Military Camp died when the car he was driving left the road and hit a bank in Lower Hutt at 12.40 a.m. yesterday. He was Andrew Douglas Greenman, aged 23, formerly of Auckland. The passengers in the car, two girls aged 18, were slightly injured. A Raglan woman was killed when her car left Wainui Road in Raglan County, near Hamilton, at 12.30 a.m. yesterday. She was Hineoterangi Janice Manihera, aged 26. The police said the car rolled down a 20m bank and that Ms Manihera was
thrown from the car. There were high winds 'and rain in the area at the time. Two men died when their rental car hit a bank and rolled into a creek at Arthurs Point, near Queenstown, on Friday night. They were Arthur Kapua Wilks, aged 32, of Invercargill; and Robert Stuart Power, of Bluff. The car and its two occupants were discovered about 8.30 a.m, on Saturday by a local farmer. Two other persons were killed on Friday night. A motor-cyclist died in Manukau, Auckland. He was Kevin Allan Cunningham, aged 16, of Manurewa. An Oamaru man was killed and three injured when a car crashed near Pukeuri,
in North Otago. He was Neville Thomas Gibson, aged 22, the car's driver. A Ministry of Transport spokesman *in Wellington said that driving conditions throughout New Zealand were “not too good" with snow falling in central areas of both islands. Ten people were killed last year in the Labour Day week-end period, which begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and will end at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The record road toll for a Labour Day week-end was 16 in 1978.
