New National Youth Band

Six young Christchurch musicians are among 45 from throughout New Zealand chosen for the 1983 National Youth Band.

They are C. J. Phillips, B flat horn: G. S. Sullivan, tenor horn; S. L. Neil, euphonium; M. J. Close, tenor trombone; J. G. Wood, E flat bass: and B. Hoy. soprano cornet. A Christchurch man, Mr S. G. Leader, has been named as drum major, a position he held in this year's band. About 140 applications from musicians under 19 were received for th.e 45 places. Auditions were held in various centres by the musical director, Mr R. C. Clayton, of Rotorua. The New Zealand Brass Band Association’s executive officer, Mr John Harrison of Christchurch, said the band would be together in Auckland from January 14 to 25 for rehearsals, a short tour, and a concert.
