N.Z. doctor elected to heart fellowship
Dr M. G. Nicholls, of the cardiology department at Princess Margaret Hospital, has been elected to the Fellowship of the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research. The North Canterbury Hospital Board’s finance committee was told that the fellowship had been accorded to only two or three New Zealanders. The fellowship was awarded to Dr Nicholls while attending the American Heart Association Conference on Hypertension in Cleveland. Ohio, this month.
Dr J. D. Holmes, the medical superintendent of the board’s community health care services, has been granted a year's unpaid leave to complete a postgraduate diploma in community health at the University of Otago. The committee agreed that Dr Holmes had made a big contribution to community health services in Christchurch, and that it would be hard to fill his place for a year. His work would have to be picked up by other staff members during his absence, the committee was told.
