Young drivers succeed at Akaroa meeting
The Akaroa Trotting Club's on-course only betting meeting at Motukarara on Saturday was notable for the first successes for two young junior reinsmen, Murray Howard and Gerard O'Reilly. Howard's win with Boniface in the Robinson and Adams Pace will be especially memorable, as the four-year-old Knowing Bret gelding is also his first racing venture. The Christchurch reinsman, who is 23, leased Boniface in partnership with his father, Cyril, after he qual-
ifed from Bryce Buchanan's Invercargill stable last season. Ironically, Cyril Howard gained his first win as a professional galloping trainer with a thoroughbred called Boniface in 1951. After settling in mid-field. Howard brought Boniface home with a well-timed strong finish on Saturday to win by a head. Gerard O'Reilly, at 17 years the youngest of the prominent -Mid-Canterbury family to hold a trotting licence, showed judgment by
bringing Yellow Ribbon to victory by three quarters of a length with a strong late run in the Ling Memorial Pace. Gerard's older brothers, Pat junior, and Kerry, are established reinsmen, who scored with Geena and Garrymite respectively at Oamaru, while another brother. Leo, has had success since he started driving last season. The totalisator handled $117,000, which was down $BOOO on last year. '
