Hands Down dominates Hannon Memorial field

Special correspondent Dunedin Hands Down is an obvious choice in the Hannon Memorial Free-for-all at the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting today, but the poor record of favourites in the race sounds a note of caution about his chance. Hands Down was to have raced next in the New Zealand Cup on November 9 but he put on so much condition since his last race on September 17 that his trainer. Derek Jones, decided to start him today. He was a disappointing fourth in the Hannon last year after he had won at his previous start, on August 29. He won the Kaikoura Cup a week later. Today’s race, a free-for-all over 2600 m with a small field, looks tailor-made for him.

Bonnie's Chance was another of the beaten division in the Hannon last year but she was blocked for a run. She was disappointing last time out in a Free-for-all at Forbury Park on a slushy track on October 16. She tangled near the 200 m when brought out to make her challenge from behind the pacemaker, Zabadak. She was a well beaten third behind Vita Man and Tarlad on a slushy track at Ashburton. Zabadak held off the solid finishing Enterprise over 2700 m at Forbury Park and this pair could again be to the fore.
