Aust. pips N.Z. in shears test
NZPA Melbourne Australia pipped New Zealand by 8.84 points in the Sunbeam Golden Shears international shearing test at Euroa, Victoria, on Saturday evening.
Australia, represented by Bill O'Connor (captain) of Euroa and the brothers John and Mark Conlan from Kyneton finished on 267.66 points.
The New Zealand team. Jack Dowd (captain) of Morrinsville, Larry Lewis from Gisborne and Samson Te Whata from Kaikohe ended with a points tally of 258.82. Individual champion of the test was Australia's John Conlan with 90.43 points. Runner-up was his brother Mark. The fourth member of the Australian team. Dick Duggan of Euroa won the blue ribbon event of the shearing world, the Panacur Forlonge invitation with a total of 91.40 points.
The Golden Shears open championship was won by Mark Conlan with Adrian Cox and Larry Lewis of NewZealand second and third.
A special encouragement award for young shearers by the Euroa Shearing Association was made to Geoff Walker of Avenel.
On Friday night Mark Conlan w-on the final of the’ Golden Shears national circuit to qualify for his position in the 1982 Australian team.
Last night's Golden Shears international win decided the current series of five tests in Australia's favour.
Shearing teams from the two countries meet twice each year — in Masterton in March and Euroa each October.
New Zealand won the first two series. The fourth series is scheduled to begin in New Zealand next March.
