Fish oil could earn $30M
PA Wellington Oil from the orange roughy fish could earn New Zealand $3O million a year in export sales, the Minister of Science and Technology. Dr Shearer, has said. The oil u’as a potentially valuable substitute for sperm whale oil for use in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and lubrication industries, Dr Shearer said, when answering a question in Parliament. Extensive research on the oil’s properties had been conducted by the Department of Scientific ’ and Industrial Research. Samples had been sent to users and oil brokers in Europe, Japan, and the United States and trial orders exported. The estimate of $3O million was based on the value of sperm whale oil. Dr Shearer said.
