Ben set to make amends for recent costly defeat

Special correspondent Auckland Ben looks to have a fine chance on the opening night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting tonight of making amends for his costly defeat at Alexandra Park a few weeks ago. The North Island’s top four-year-old pacer was backed down to very short odds in the main race at the Kumeu Club’s course-only totalisator meeting at Alexandra Park on September 30. He finished only third, to Skipper’s Reign and Grasior, but he was desperately unlucky. In his efforts to work Ben clear of a pocket approaching the home turn, his driver, Graham Reaks, caused interference to other runners and was subsequently suspended. Ben broke and was giving Skipper's reign a big start by the time he was settled again and in the clear. He lost no friends by his performance, and a dashing run at organised workouts at Pukekohe last Sunday showed he was. in splendid trim for tonight’s Amtote Handicap. Run over 2200 m from a mobile start, the Amtote Handicap has drawn a strong field of 10, including Quiet Win, Remote, Dutchy and El Regale from the South Island. Dutchy has been disappointing this season hut the other visitors have shown some good form and will be expected to acquit themselves well. Dillon Dales seems bound to be a warm favourite in the Pressmen’s Free-For-All, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. ■ He won stylishly at Alexandra Park on September 18, his only race this season, and he went boldly when third over 2700 m in fast time at last Wednesday’s matinee at Alexandra Park. Nicabar, Grasior, Dealer's Choice, Don Diego and Kiwi Lord are in-form horses with the. ability to give him stout opposition.
