Johnny Carson fined on drink charge
Beverly Hills California The television talk show host. Johnny Carson, pleaded no contest' to a drunken driving charge yesterday and was ordered to take a driver's education or alcohol treatment course. The plea was entered through his lawyer. Robert Shapiro, who told the judge: “The no-contest plea is entered against my advice but with my consent.” Municipal court judge David Kidney accepted Carson's statement that he wanted to enter the plea rather than go to trial.
Carson was placed on three years summary probation, fined $B4O and ordered to complete either a driver’s education or alcohol treatment course by April 1983.
In addition, Carson's driver’s licence was restricted to permit him to drive only to and from work for the next 90 days. Carson was stopped on
February 27 on La Cienega Boulevard. The 56-year-old entertainer. who said he had been at a local restaurant with his wife. Joanna, and friends, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood-alcohol content in excess of 0.10 per cent after he failed a field sobriety test.
