Special correspondent Auckland Franklin’s. eight-race, afternoon programme at Pukekohe tomorrow seems headed for certain success. Stakes of $20,000 for all events guaranteed fine fields while eight events, as against a wearying 10, represent a return to normality which most racegoers will welcome. The fifth and sixth races, first and second leg of the T.A.B. double, will be the two for class one runners but just about all the other six are equally interesting. McGettigan, unbeaten in two starts, heads the list for the first on the programme, the Castlemaine Handicap, and in the last, the Balic Estate Handicap, Saugatuck, the Levin three-year-old, Kar Dan, a Woodville visitor, Belmore and First Sovereign, are just four of the field claiming excellent last-start form. Wadsworth will be going for his fourth win in a bit less than five- weeks when he tackles the first leg of the double, the Flag Inns Trophy and it will be surprising if he does not give another very good account of himself. Last time, at Ellerslie on the second day of the Auckland spring meeting, Wadsworth took the .2400 metres Mitchelson Cup, the time before a middle distance highweight at Matamata. He showed any amount of early promise and, at six years old, is now right at peak form. As well as being a good stayer, Wadsworth has a turn of speed which should enable him to keep nicely in touch with the pace however fast they go. The hardest for Wadsworth to beat will very likely be Bound To Honour, Dee Bee Lass, Kev’s Boy and Swell Deal. Bound To Honour looked close to her best when a close second behind Honorville in the 2100 metres Whakatane Cup two starts back. She was below form meanwhile, when unplaced over 2200 metres on the first day of the Auckland spring meeting but that was with 57kg. The scale is down for Saturday. Bound To Honour has 51kg, a weight she will manage more comfortably because she is smaller than most. Swell Deal was another failure on the first day at Ellerslie but she is capable of much better. Two starts

back she went close over 2150 metres at Te Rapa, beaten by less than a length behind Loughanure and Dee Bee Lass. Loughanure, meanwhile, has been beaten twice. Dee Bee Lass went disappointingly when 11th in the Whakatane Cup, then much better when beaten by only Coober’s Knight over 2-200 metres at Ellerslie. One of half a dozen or more horses could win the second, leg, the National Mutual 1200. The field is so open, just about the only thing certain is that the 1200 metres, if the conditions remain favourable, will be run very fast. Luck at the start could have a bearing on the outcome. If Decanka makes a smart getaway she should be hard to beat, it will be right out of character if she does not make a showing. T.A.B.
