Deb’s Mate wins Moe Cup
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney Deb's Mate was untroubled in winning the $16,000 Moe Cup yesterday near Melbourne. Ridden by Debbie Healey, Deb’s Mate cruised to the line after leading for most of the 2050 metres and finished two and a half lengths clear of the other New Zealand galloper in the field, the Jack Taylor-trained Spring Moss. Deb’s Mate, which made an excellent Australian debut when second -to Kingston Town in the Caulfield Stakes.
was ridden under a tight rein yesterday but still bolted in for an easy win. The Palm Beach gelding, trained by Harvey Wadham, is being set for the $275,000 weight-for-age W. S. Cox Plate (2050 m to be raced at Moonee Valley tomorrow week. Spring Moss (Moss Trooper-Ballendella) improved on his last start fourth in the Cranbourne Cup. and finished a short half-head clear of third placed Sir Tristram mare. Blue Era.
