Shipping news New tanker for coastal service
The Union Group has won a contract to build a new coastal tanker for the New Zealand oil industry, to replace the Erne, in mid-1984. The tanker will be about 30,000 tons deadweight, designed to carry New Zealand crude oil, bitumen and fuel oil around New Zealand waters from 1984 until well into the next century. The design will be of the most stringent standards as laid down by the International Maritime Organisation. It will be more fuel efficient than the Erne. B.P. Oil New Zealand and Shell Oil New Zealand charter the coastal tanker fleet together. B.P. conducted a worldwide search for an owner willing to offer a suitable tanker on charger. Considerable interest was shown among shipowners and shipyards, resulting in intense competition to win the contract. A short list was recently considered by the New Zealand oil companies on the basis of written offers for a number of specific designs of tanker. Discussions will be held during the next few weeks between the Union Group and the oil industry to finalise detailed aspects of design. A shipyard to build the new oil tanker will be selected by both groups. ARRIVALS Silver Fern (6.30 a.m.) 5027, Bluff (Japan Line). Elbe (4.30 p.m.), 499, Auckland (Scales).
