Rape in churchyard
A woman has told Christchurch detectives how she was dragged into a churchyard and raped by a man in his 40s on Wednesday evening. The woman, aged 31, was walking home along Waimairi Road about 11.30 p.m. after visiting friends in Wharenui Road, when she was attacked from behind
outside the Westburn Church. The man raped her and made off on foot. The woman went to a passing milkman for help. A big police search found no trace of the offender. Detective R. Homan said the rapist was described as a Polynesian, aged in his 40s, about 173 cm (sft Bin) tall, of medium build, clean-shaven,
with tight curly hair and an over-all neat appearance. He was wearing a dark jersey and medium-tone trousers. Anyone who might have seen anything suspicious near the intersection of Waimairi Road and Maidstone Road about 11.30 p.m. should get in touch with the Christchurch C. 1.8., said Detective Homan.
